How do I know the clutch needs replacing?

It slips uphill or under hard acceleration, the pedal feel changes, there is a burning smell, or the car judders pulling away in first. The dual-mass flywheel usually also warns with a metallic rattle at idle that disappears when you press the clutch.

The most expensive mistake we see: driving on with a slipping clutch "because it still pulls". The overheated disc ends up damaging the dual-mass flywheel and, worst case, the gearbox. Changed in time, it is a scheduled job; changed late, it drags other parts with it. In a clutch replacement we fit the complete kit and check seals and the guide bushing — reopening the gearbox for a 10-euro seal wastes the whole labour cost. If your symptom is a clicking noise when turning, it may be the driveshafts rather than the clutch.

Dual-mass flywheel vs. solid flywheel conversion

Quick answer: in most modern cars we recommend keeping the dual-mass; converting to solid only makes sense in very specific uses, accepting more vibration.

CriterionDual-mass (original)Solid conversion
ComfortFilters engine vibrationMore vibration and transmitted noise
DurabilityLimited; replaced with the kitVery high
CompatibilityManufacturer’s original designNot available/advisable on all models
When to choose itNormal use, factory comfortWork vehicles with many starts under load

We quote both options when a homologated conversion kit exists for your model, with the pros and cons made clear.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a clutch last?

It depends on use: between 100,000 and over 250,000 km. City driving, hill starts and resting your foot on the pedal shorten it; in Barcelona the average is lower than in motorway use.

Do you always replace the dual-mass with the clutch?

Not always: we measure its play and condition. But if it shows play or noise, replacing it in the same job avoids paying the same labour twice.

Do you repair automatic gearboxes?

We service them (oil and filter) and diagnose faults; depending on the problem, we propose a repair or a reconditioned unit with warranty.

What is that clicking when I turn?

Almost always a worn CV joint, often because a torn boot let the grease out. Caught early, you replace the boot; late, the whole driveshaft.
