How long does a clutch last and what wears it out?
Between 100,000 and over 250,000 km depending on use: city driving, hill starts and resting your foot on the pedal shorten it most. In Barcelona, with its traffic and hills, the average is lower than in motorway use.
The home test we recommend if you suspect the clutch: on the flat, engine warm, select a high gear at low revs and floor it. If the revs climb but the car does not pull in proportion, the disc is slipping and its days are numbered. From then on, every week of waiting works against the dual-mass flywheel, which absorbs the overheating.
