Do automatic gearboxes need servicing?
Yes — even though many manufacturers sell them as "sealed for life": automatic fluid works hard, and changing it every 60,000–80,000 km drastically extends the gearbox’s life. Most expensive automatic failures start with exhausted fluid.
"Sealed for life" is the most expensive phrase in the automatic gearbox world. In practice: the fluid degrades, shifts start to jerk, and repairing an automatic costs several times what all its fluid changes together would have. If your automatic is past 80,000 km and nobody has touched the fluid, now is the time. In manuals, the classic is cold grinding into second — a tired synchro you can live with for years if you treat it kindly — or a hum that grows with speed — a bearing — which should not wait. And before condemning a gearbox, we always rule out the cheap stuff: mounts, the clutch and fluid levels.
Frequently asked questions
Which fluid does my automatic use?
The one specified by the gearbox manufacturer (not always the car’s): a specific ATF standard depending on whether it is a torque converter, dual-clutch or CVT. Generic fluid is a breakdown waiting to happen.
Is a gearbox worth repairing?
It depends on the damage and the car’s value. We quote both a repair and a reconditioned unit, and you decide with the numbers in front of you.
Why does 2nd grind when cold?
A worn synchro plus cold, thick oil. Fresh gearbox oil of the right viscosity often improves the symptom; the definitive cure is opening the box.
My dual-clutch jerks — is that normal?
At low speed some abruptness is inherent to the system; strong or growing jerks are not, and deserve early diagnosis — especially the mechatronic unit and its fluid.
