When should brake pads be changed?

When the friction material drops below about 3 mm, when the wear indicator lights up, or when you hear metallic squealing under braking. In heavy city use like Barcelona’s, front pads typically last 25,000 to 50,000 km.

The one thing almost nobody checks: brake fluid. It is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture — and with 3% water its boiling point plummets; on a long descent from Collserola that means a spongy pedal exactly when you need it most. That is why with every pad change we also measure fluid moisture, and with shock absorbers we apply the same logic: they are replaced in full axle pairs, never one at a time.

Pads only, or pads and discs?

Quick answer: if the disc is above its minimum thickness and undamaged, pads alone are fine; if it is at the minimum, scored or vibrating under braking, they are changed together.

CriterionPads onlyPads + discs
Disc conditionAbove minimum, healthy surfaceAt minimum, scored or warped
ResultCorrect braking with proper bedding-inBraking like new, no vibration
Risk of false economyNone if the disc measures wellNew pads on a bad disc wear out in weeks

We measure the disc in front of you with a micrometer; the criterion is the manufacturer’s stamped minimum thickness, not the sale.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the steering wheel shake when braking?

Almost always warped discs or uneven wear; sometimes play in the steering or suspension. It is confirmed with a front axle inspection.

How often is brake fluid changed?

The general recommendation is every 2 years regardless of mileage, because it absorbs ambient moisture. We measure the water percentage at every service.

How do I know my shock absorbers are worn?

Bouncing after speed bumps, body roll in corners, longer braking distances and uneven tyre wear are the typical signs. A worn shock lengthens braking even with new brakes.

Do you use leading-brand parts?

Yes, we work with OEM-level manufacturers or certified equivalent quality, always with a written warranty.
