Engine cooling in Barcelona

A temperature needle climbing, coolant dropping on its own or a heater that will not heat: the cooling circuit warns you before the overheat. Listening in time saves engines.

What does this service include at Tallers Marathon?

Circuit pressure test, replacement of thermostats, radiators, pumps and hoses, and a correct system bleed.

  • Pressure testLocates the exact leak: hose, radiator, pump or tank.
  • Gas test in the tankRules out the serious one: a blown head gasket.
  • Thermostats and pumpsThe two typical causes of a car that overheats (or never warms up).
  • Correct coolantManufacturer type and ratio, with a full air bleed.

Why is my car overheating?

The most frequent causes, in order: low level from a leak, a stuck thermostat, a fan that will not kick in and a worn water pump. All are reasonable repairs if caught before the overheat; afterwards, the conversation may be about a head gasket.

An emergency protocol worth an engine: if the needle heads for the red, heater on maximum (it is an extra radiator), cabin fan on full and, at the first safe chance, engine off. Never open the circuit cap hot — it is pressurised and spits boiling coolant. And the habit that ruins engines: topping up with tap water summer after summer. Water dilutes the coolant, protection drops and limescale attacks the pump and radiator from inside. The right coolant, at the right ratio, protects against heat, cold and corrosion. In Barcelona the circuit’s exam is the August jam on the Ronda: that is where tired electric fans retire. It all starts with a glance at the level at every oil change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use water instead of coolant?

Only as an emergency to reach the garage. Water alone boils sooner, freezes sooner and corrodes the circuit. The correct mixture must be restored afterwards.

How often is coolant changed?

Depending on the type, every 2 to 5 years or more (long-life). Its condition is checked with a refractometer at services.

Why does my heater not heat?

Low level, air in the circuit or a stuck-open thermostat are the typical causes. Curiously, a heater that will not heat is often the first warning of a cooling problem.

Does overheating always damage the engine?

Not always, but every minute in the red is a gamble with the head gasket. After any overheat, a combustion gas test is worthwhile before driving on.
