EGR valve: decarbonising and replacement
Juddering, power loss, black smoke and unstable idle: a carboned-up EGR is one of the most common faults on city diesels. Often solved by cleaning, without changing the valve.
What does this service include at Tallers Marathon?
Diagnosis of the EGR’s real operation, decarbonising of valve and ducts, and replacement when the mechanism is worn out.
- Live-data diagnosisWe compare the valve’s actual opening against the commanded one.
- DecarbonisingCleaning of carboned-up valve and intake ducts.
- Replacement when dueNew OEM-level valve if the motor or position sensor is worn out.
- Adaptation via diagnosticsThe new EGR is adapted and its full cycle verified.
What does the EGR valve do and why does it fail so often?
It recirculates part of the exhaust gases into the intake to reduce nitrogen oxides; working with soot-laden gases, it carbons up until it sticks. Urban use with a cold engine accelerates the process.
The star question at the counter: "can’t you just blank it off?". No — and beyond the fine, here is why: blanking the EGR raises combustion temperature, and in many engines that ends up damaging injectors, cylinder head or turbo. The cheap fault becomes an expensive one. What does work: cleaning valve and manifold when carbon is the problem, and correcting the usage pattern — a short-trip diesel is the perfect carbon factory. If your car chains EGR and DPF faults, the honest conversation may be whether a diesel suits your use at all.
Frequently asked questions
Clean or replace the EGR?
If the mechanism (electric or pneumatic motor and position sensor) works, cleaning is usually enough. If it is worn out, the valve is replaced. The measurement decides, not the eye.
How long does the cleaning take?
Depending on the engine and access, between a few hours and a day. Some engines require removing the intake manifold.
Will it clog again?
With the same usage pattern, yes, within a few years. A weekly high-rev run greatly delays carbon build-up.
Does the EGR affect the ITV?
Yes: a failing EGR raises emissions and can exceed smoke limits. With an active fault in the ECU it is also a straight failure.
