Particulate filter replacement in Barcelona
When the ceramic is melted, cracked or packed with ash, cleaning is no longer an option. We fit homologated particulate filters, fix the cause that destroyed the old one and adapt the ECU with diagnostics so the new one lasts as long as it should.
At Tallers Marathon, a multi-brand garage in Sant Andreu (Carrer del Vallès 47, 08030 Barcelona), we replace particulate filters for drivers from Sant Andreu, La Sagrera, Bon Pastor, Trinitat Vella and Navas, with a fixed, free quote before touching anything and a written warranty.
What does DPF replacement include at Tallers Marathon?
Diagnostic confirmation that the filter cannot be recovered, a homologated replacement, root-cause correction and full ECU adaptation.
- Honest pre-checkIf the filter can be saved by cleaning, we tell you: replacement is the last resort.
- Homologated replacementOriginal or equivalent with European type approval; never hollow or uncertified parts.
- Root cause correctedInjection, EGR, sensors or usage habits: left unfixed, the new filter dies the same way.
- Adaptation with diagnosticsCounters zeroed, new filter registered and a road test with live data.
When is cleaning no longer enough?
The particulate filter is a porous ceramic: while the damage is only dirt, it can be cleaned; when the damage is physical, it must be replaced. These are the three most common ends of life we see at the garage:
The difference shows up in the diagnosis and sometimes to the naked eye: absurd differential pressures, ash counters maxed out or ceramic dust coming out of the tailpipe. Before reaching this point there is almost always a history of ignored warning lights; if your case is still just saturation, particulate filter cleaning is the sensible and considerably cheaper option. On the particulate filter (DPF) page we explain the whole system and how to extend its life.
DPF deletes: why we do not do them
We get asked often and the answer is always the same: we do not delete, gut or map out the particulate filter of any vehicle driven on public roads. It is an illegal modification of the type-approval conditions: it means an ITV failure as soon as it is inspected or emissions are measured, exposes you to fines and can cause serious problems with the insurer after an accident. And it multiplies the particles the neighbourhood breathes, which is no small detail.
The legal alternative exists and works: a homologated replacement, the cause corrected, and driving habits that allow regeneration. A new filter properly fitted and properly managed will pass 200,000 km without drama.
How we replace the filter, step by step
- Confirmatory diagnosis. We measure pressures, temperatures and counters to rule out that a clean could save the current filter.
- Fixed quote. We source the homologated replacement for your exact engine and give you a fixed, free written price before starting.
- Cause correction. We repair whatever destroyed the filter: leaking injectors, a stuck EGR, pressure or temperature sensors out of spec.
- Physical replacement. We remove the damaged filter, fit the new one with new gaskets and fasteners and check the differential pressure and temperature sensors.
- Adaptation and test. With diagnostics we register the new filter, zero the soot and ash counters and verify on the road that it regenerates normally.
If the car also arrives with a tired catalytic converter — it happens more than you would think when the mixture has been wrong for a long time — see the catalytic converter cleaning and repair page or the general catalytic converters one. And after fitting a new filter to a high-mileage engine, an engine decarbonisation helps less dirt reach the exhaust from day one. For anything else, the form and opening hours are on the contact page.
Frequently asked questions about DPF replacement
How do I know my particulate filter can no longer be cleaned?
Through diagnosis and measurement: ash counters at their limit, differential pressure out of range even after regenerating, or ceramic debris in the exhaust point to physical damage. When the substrate is melted, cracked or disintegrated, no cleaning will recover it.
Does the new filter have to be an original from the car maker?
Not necessarily. We fit homologated replacements, which can be original or from equivalent manufacturers with the same European type approval. What we never fit are hollow filters or non-homologated parts, because they invalidate the ITV and are illegal.
Why won't you delete the DPF if the car 'would run better'?
Because removing or gutting the filter of a car driven on public roads is illegal: it means an automatic ITV failure, fines, and problems with the insurer after an accident. And the car does not run better: it just pollutes far more.
Is fitting the new filter enough on its own?
No. If the cause that destroyed it is still active (injection, EGR, sensors, wrong oil or city-only driving), the new filter will load up just the same. That is why the replacement includes root-cause diagnosis and ECU adaptation to the new filter.
What is the filter adaptation with diagnostics?
The ECU keeps soot and ash counters for the old filter. After fitting the new one, they must be zeroed and the replacement registered so regenerations are scheduled correctly. Without that step, the car manages the new filter as if the old one were still there.
How much does replacing the particulate filter cost?
It depends on the model and on the homologated replacement available. After the diagnosis we give you a fixed, free written quote; if the filter can still be recovered by cleaning, we will propose that option first, which is always cheaper.
